Branches of Statistics

Descriptive statistics focuses on collecting, summarizing, and presenting data.
Inferential statistics (sometimes referred to as “mathematical statistics”) involves drawing conclusions and/or making decisions about processes or populations based on sample data. It makes use of probability theory.
